For the last few months, we’ve been cooking up something hot…a live candidate forum for those who like their local politics with a bit of spice.
At RANGE, we believe engagement in local politics should be accessible to voters. We want to remove barriers standing between you and being an informed community member and voter — whether that’s by demystifying complicated policies or making civic engagement feel fun.
We do this because we believe everyone should have the tools to hold politicians’ feet to the fire, wherever they fall on the political spectrum.
But we’ve been thinking about it, and politicians have more body parts than just feet. That’s why, this election season
🌶️🌶️🌶️We’ll be holding their mouths to the fire as well. 🌶️🌶️🌶️
We’re inviting you to come along.
Join us on Sunday, September 7 from 5 to 8:30 pm for Spokane’s Spiciest Candidate Forum, where candidates running for Spokane City Council races will join RANGE reporter Erin Sellers onstage at The Guardian to answer increasingly spicy questions while eating increasingly spicy food cooked by Chef Tony Brown - the mind behind Ruins and some of Spokane’s best restaurants of the last 15 years.

We’ll start the evening off with an Eat-and-Greet, where you can mix and mingle with the candidates to ask spicy questions of your own, and test your own spice tolerance with appetizers by Chef Brown.
Then, we’ll put candidates in the Hot Seats. They’ll join City Hall reporter Erin Sellers onstage and go head-to-head with their district opponent, answering increasingly spicy questions about their campaigns and their big plans for Spokane all while enjoying (but not too much) increasingly spicy bites designed by Brown — no relation to our current mayor.
Join us next month for some of the sweatiest democracy you’ll ever see, and don’t forget — civic engagement is hot, and if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the candidacy!
Tickets are available on a sliding scale ranging from completely free for those experiencing economic hardship to $30, with an optional food add-on if you want to try apps! We want to keep all our election content to be as accessible as possible so everyone can be an informed voter, but transparently, we’ve also got food and venue rental costs to cover here, so: pick the price that feels doable for you, and if you’ve got extra in your pocket this month, you can take a $30 ticket to cover costs for someone who needed a free ticket!
