20 Questions with District 1 Spokane City Council Candidates

Where do the council candidates stand on public safety, affordability, renters’ rights and more? Here’s a bite-sized snapshot before you get your ballots!

Dixit wins District 1

Spokane’s District 1, which covers the northeast from downtown, including the Logan and Hillyard neighborhoods, is the most economically disadvantaged district in town and home to many of the most pressing political issues facing Spokane.

The two candidates are incumbent conservative Jonathan Bingle — one of two conservatives on the five-member council, both from District 1 — and community organizer Sarah Dixit.

We asked both candidates to give us brief, clear answers (think something that could fit in a tweet) to 20 questions about some of the key issues emerging for voters this year: Do you support the construction of a new jail? Would you support new taxes? If so, what kinds of tax? Under what circumstances? Should the city pass laws to limit immigration arrests on city property?

Bingle did not respond to four requests for answers, but luckily, as the incumbent, he has an extensive record of public comments on many issues, and we’re doing our best to include his voice by linking to previous comments he made addressing our questions.

All that and more in this handy chart, and if this isn’t enough to help you make your choice, don’t worry: you can learn more about them here. If you want to dive in even deeper than that, we produced a full podcast focusing on a candidate forum that Bingle participated in. You can listen to that here or wherever you get your podcasts.
