For the chronically online RANGEheads out there, this may not be a *complete* surprise, but for everyone else, hopefully this is Big News™️: starting November 7, you can join Luke Baumgarten and Erin Sellers every Thursday from 3 to 4 pm on KYRS Thin Air Community Radio (92.3 & 88.1 FM and streaming online) for Free RANGE, our brand new radio show!
A few months ago, we promised you a weekly podcast, then failed miserably in the delivery of that; it turns out trying to publish regular news content, run a member drive, apply for grants and record and edit podcast audio with a team of 3.5 is just not an attainable goal. By going live over the radio waves every week, we can cut out the 10 or so hours Luke spent obsessing over and fine-tuning every facet of the pod, which made the regular audio delivery of the RANGE news you love feel out of reach.
But that failure got us dreaming, and we’re so excited to announce our partnership with KYRS, a volunteer-powered, non-commercial, community radio station based right here in Spokane, Washington.
Free RANGE (the name chosen overwhelmingly by voters across Reddit, Twitter and Instagram) will feature a round up of the serious (and not so serious) local news of the week, behind the scenes drama at public meetings and deeper dives on important stories with the journalists who broke them.
BUT WAIT! There’s more: if you’ve been tuning into KYRS’ Fall Fund Drive you may have heard us on your radio teasing some upcoming appearances. Next week we won’t just be coming to you live on Thursday, we’ll also be on air a few times on Election Day! First, we’re sitting down with Maeve Griffith (the infamous Soccermom Susie) on her show Out and About on Tuesday from 4 to 5 pm, and then BACK from 8 to 9 pm for a breakdown of the first round of election results from our local and state races. We’ll probably say a thing or two about the national race too, but, honestly, we’re going to try to keep that to a minimum.
This is just our latest attempt to get the signature RANGE flavor you love in as many random formats as possible!
Some of y’all like to get your news in the form of memes. Some prefer our longer stories with all the context you could possibly need. Some only have the time to catch up on everything through our Friday Wide RANGE newsletter. If none of those work, or you devour them all and still find yourself wanting more, you can break out your boombox and tune in via terrestrial radio. Whether it’s longform news, social media blurbs, newsletters — our goal at RANGE has always been to meet you with the news you need wherever you’re at, and we’re excited to add the airwaves to the growing list of places you can find us.
