Welcome to CIVICS, where we break down the week’s municipal meetings throughout the Inland Northwest, so you can get involved and speak out about the issues you care about.
Almost everyone’s taking a break this week (even Library Shane — all libraries close early at 4 pm on Friday, August 11 for an all-staff event), so you can join City Council in taking a breather. Maybe check out an event instead?
This week, these groups are still meeting:
Unity in Community
Unity in Community, the Inland Northwest’s largest multicultural celebration, is happening this Saturday at the clock tower in Riverfront Park. We’ll be there with bells on, so stop on by and say hi to your local RANGE reporters!

Spokane Board of County Commissioners
Editor's Note: We could’ve SWORN there was no county commission meeting agenda this morning and therefore no meeting, but a stalwart RANGEhead kindly pointed out our mistake. Here’s what’s going on at the County Commission meeting tomorrow:
Big checks coming in
Spokane County Commissioners will vote to accept some large chunks of funding, including a nearly nine million dollar grant for Housing and Community Development from the Department of Commerce’s Consolidated Homeless Grant. The county is also voting to accept a $10,898,906.00 contract for developmental disability services, a $18,048,525.00 contract for Washington Behavioral Health admin services, and an approximately $323,000 contract to provide funding to expand evidence based treatment and training programs in local juvenile courts. These programs include increased access to family and systemic therapy for juveniles in the system
Swinging for the fences
Major League Baseball may be a historic pastime, but it’s prepping for the future — a $2 million award is coming in under the Tourism Promotion Agreement to modernize Avista Stadium.

Light week, heavy food
It’s a light week for CIVICS, but if you’re curious about the cost of taco crumbles, Spokane School Board will be voting on budget items for the upcoming fiscal year including beef, chicken and dairy products.
In a separate, special meeting on Wednesday, the Spokane School Board will be planning a $200 million bond initiative for the February 2024 election. The board will be considering three options that prioritize different projects, but all options involve funding major modernizations or replacements for several school buildings.
