Welcome to CIVICS, where we break down the week’s municipal meetings throughout the Inland Northwest, so you can get involved and speak out about the issues you care about.

We’re getting to the part of the year where a bunch of meetings are cancelled, which means you, us and some government officials all get a bit of a break. Queue abbreviated CIVICS!

The thing — and there’s only one — that sticks out to us this week: The Spokane County GOP will host a community forum for candidates running for Washington’s Sixth Legislative District at Calvary Spokane.

Important meetings this week:

Sixth Dist. GOP candidate forum at Calvary Spokane

The Spokane County Republican Party will host a community forum for candidates running for the state’s Sixth Legislative District. The forum will take place Tuesday, June 30, from 5 to 7 pm at Calvary Spokane Family Center at 511 West Hastings Road.

It’s unclear which candidates will be there based on available information, but the candidates running for Position 1 are Republicans Alan Nolan, Isaiah Paine, Jennifer Morton and Sueann Davis; and Democrats Michaela Kelso and Nicolette Ocheltree. The incumbent in this seat is Republican Mike Volz, who announced he will not seek reelection. The candidates running for Position 2 are Independent Aaron Croft, Republican Jonathan Bingle and Democrat Julia Payne. The Republican incumbent Jenny Graham also said she would not seek reelection.

If you recognize the venue and aren’t sure why, Calvary was recently the subject of a Roys Report investigation detailing allegations of systemic sex and spiritual abuse by Pastor Ken Ortize’s son Ben, whom Ortize later elevated to leadership positions.
