Hey, neighbor!
Welcome to a different kind of newsroom for a better Spokane.
RANGE is journalist-owned, member-supported and always free to read.
We believe news that is deep, meticulously reported and fair can hold our leaders accountable and change our city for the better. We publish online and send it directly to your email, so you can catch up on the news when you have time.

Your neighbors think weāre great. We think you will too.
"I love that the RANGE reports on the nitty gritty: in-depth reporting [about] what's going on in your government at the local level [and] politics that affect you directly [...] but has never gotten the reporting it deserves until now. Bravo!"
ā Justin from Cheney
"RANGE is the only media outlet sharing detailed information about how to be civically engaged. I love knowing about what government meetings are happening and what's on the agenda (when they are made public). RANGE helps me stay informed and let's me know when my outrage needs to turn into advocacy."
ā April from Spokane Valley
"Without you, investigative and civics reporting would be minimal, almost nonexistent, in Spokane."
ā A RANGE Member from Liberty Lake

Written by working people, for working people
RANGE isnāt owned by a hedge fund. We arenāt owned by a family that has moved in the corridors of power for over 100 years. We arenāt owned by millionaires or billionaires.
RANGE is owned by the working journalists who are chasing down stories every day, answering your questions, giving you more context on social media, and following up on stories to make sure our institutions are accountable to the people. (We also occasionally write marketing copy like this.)
None of us come from power and privilege. All of us became journalists to better understand how our world works ā especially the stuff that happens in shadowy corners and behind closed doors.
So we write stories the way we would want to read them: in plain language that explains complicated processes and jargon to help normal people understand how power works.

Spokane is better with all of us
We fundamentally believe that a democracy is worthless if only a few voices get heard, and therefore the only way to make Spokane a place where everyone can thrive is to give everyone the tools to demand better. Thatās why we started RANGE.
We write for common people and we respect your intelligence.
Business and governmental jargon keeps people out of vital conversations affecting their lives. We take time to explain complicated topics other outlets gloss over, because we want you to know more than what is happening. We want you to know why, who is behind it and how you can take action.
We engage with readers to go deeper.
There is always so much more information in a reporterās head than can fit in a story, so we love engaging with our readers to answer specific questions and give even more context, whether thatās on social media, on our community Discord, or at our Office Hours meet and greet events.
We never paywall anything.
Spokane is home to all of us, and we all deserve to understand the things that impact our lives in a way that prepares us to advocate for ourselves and our communities. Newsrooms like ours need money to survive, but we fundamentally believe everyone deserves access to the news we make, regardless of your ability to pay.
We hope you support us not because you canāt read anything without paying, but because our work makes your life better, and Spokane better, and you want that work to continue.
